The medieval castle of Laterina

Laterina, now known as Laterina Pergine Valdarno (after merging with Pergine Valdarno in 2018), is a small municipality located in the province of Arezzo, Tuscany. Its origins date back to Etruscan and Roman times, when the area was inhabited due to its strategic location along the Arno River.

Historical Origins:

Etruscan and Roman times: The presence of ancient settlements is attested by archaeological finds in the surrounding area. The proximity to the Arno favored agricultural and commercial development.

Middle Ages: Laterina developed further in medieval times, becoming an important stronghold under the control of Arezzo. The Laterina castle, built for defensive purposes, was at the center of struggles between Guelph and Ghibelline families.

Florentine period: In the 14th century, Laterina came under the rule of the Florentine Republic, becoming integrated into the defensive system of the Florentine territory. This marked a period of relative stability and prosperity.

Today Laterina is known for its well-preserved historic center, medieval walls and paved streets that evoke the village’s ancient past. The landscape setting, with hills, olive groves and vineyards, makes it an ideal destination for those seeking the tranquility of the Tuscan countryside.

Here are the iconic places in the village that you absolutely cannot miss:

Cold Gate
This ancient gateway to the village is one of the most characteristic points of Laterina’s medieval defensive system.
It owes its name to the shady and cool position it maintains even during the hot Tuscan summers.
Passing through it is like entering another era, with the atmosphere of the past intact.

The Fortress of the Rocca
Located in the heart of the village, the Laterina Fortress was the centerpiece of the defense system and the symbol of medieval power.
From its strategic location, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the Arno River.
The fortress is now partly a ruin, but it still retains a unique charm, perfect for uncovering stories of battles and intrigue.

Church of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian
This church, dedicated to the patron saints of the village, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture with later Gothic additions.
Inside you can admire valuable works of sacred art, including paintings and wooden furnishings, that tell the story of Laterina’s devotion and culture over the centuries.
The church is the focal point of religious celebrations during the festival.

Guinigi Tower
This tower, a symbol of medieval power, is one of Laterina’s most imposing structures.
Originally part of the defensive walls, it served as a lookout and protection point for the village.
Climbing to the top (if possible) offers incredible panoramic views, as well as a full immersion in the history of the place.

Why visit these places:
Every corner of Laterina tells a piece of its history, from the Etruscan and Roman periods to the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Walking among these monuments will allow you to discover not only the architecture and landscape, but also the authentic soul of the village. A complete visit is a must for those who love Tuscany and its historical roots.
